There were nights that he felt Caleb's thumb in his eye-socket, breaking a part of his body that he had never thought could rupture so easily. Nights he could smell the strong mixture of hundreds of vamps turned to dust, mixed with burning building and death. A smell so thick, that had coated his lungs so completely, that he had practically tasted it and seen it. He would wake up needing water, or something stronger, just to wash the memory out of his mouth. There were nights that he saw her. She was there, in front of him, and alive. His fingers could glide against her chin and move through her curls. He would feel her breath against his lips and her hands on his face when she would whisper that it was all a bad dream. He would wrap her up in his arms and fall back to sleep, only to wake again and realize she wasn't there. She was still dead.
